Key Characteristics of an American Pool Table

American pool is largely quite similar to English pool, the key differences mainly come with the physical aspects of the pool table. Firstly, when playing American pool, the balls and pockets are bigger compared to English pool, in American pool you use 2 1/4″ balls whereas for English pool it’s 2″ balls that are used. The actual size of the pool table itself is different as well, an 8ft or 9ft size is considered a standard American pool table compared to an English pool table that is played on a 6ft table as standard/competition size.

One of the finer differences is the cushions, on an American pool table you will notice a much sharper cushion edge compared to an English pool table that has a flat-faced cushion. Another key aspect of an American Pool Table is the cloth, the American version of the game uses what’s referred to as a “speed” cloth, whereas English pool uses a napped cloth, so clue in the name there, this means the American pool balls travel slightly quicker and further! The final main difference comes down to the cues, as American pool uses larger and heavier balls, this results in the cues having a larger tip.
