What Is Heyball? China’s Fast-Growing Billiard Game

If you’ve spent time around billiards halls in China, you’ve probably heard of Heyball. Also known as Chinese Eight-Ball, Heyball has become one of the most popular cue sports in the country and is now gaining attention around the world.

The game combines elements of traditional pool and snooker, creating a unique challenge that rewards both accuracy and strategy.

How Heyball Is Played?

At first glance, Heyball looks similar to standard 8-ball pool. Two players compete to pocket their group of balls before sinking the 8-ball to win the game.

However, there are some important differences. The pockets are smaller and more demanding than those found on a typical pool table. This means players need greater precision when aiming and controlling the cue ball. Shots that might easily drop on a standard pool table often require much more accuracy in Heyball. Because of this, the game places a strong emphasis on cue ball control, shot selection, and tactical play.

The Heyball Table Setup

One of the most distinctive features of Heyball is the table itself. The table is typically 9ft in size and uses snooker-style cushions and pocket openings. The tighter pockets make potting balls more difficult and encourage a more skillful style of play.

The game uses the standard set of 15 object balls plus the 8-ball and cue ball:

  • Balls 1-7 are solids
  • Balls 9-15 are stripes
  • The 8-ball is the winning ball
  • A white cue ball is used for play

At the start of the game, the balls are arranged in a triangle rack, much like traditional 8-ball pool.

Heyball has grown rapidly because it offers the best of both worlds. It combines the familiar rules of pool with the precision and discipline often associated with snooker.

Players enjoy the challenge of the tighter pockets, while spectators appreciate the high level of skill required to run a table successfully.
